Why run MetaTrader on your own Proxmox host
A MetaTrader VPS is a Windows machine that runs your terminals and expert advisors around the clock. One or two of them are easy to rent. When you run ten terminals across several accounts, test strategies, or provide VPS to other traders, a single dedicated server with Proxmox VE is often the better tool:
- Isolation. Each strategy, account or client gets its own Windows machine. A crash or a bad update in one does not touch the others.
- Flexibility. Add a machine in minutes, give it more memory, clone a ready template for the next client.
- Snapshots and backups. Take a snapshot before you change an EA, and roll back if it goes wrong. Nightly backups protect the whole setup.
- One bill. One server instead of a list of separate VPS plans.
Your own machines for EAs
A typical setup for one trader or a small team:
- one Windows machine per broker or per group of accounts, each with several MetaTrader 4 or 5 terminals;
- a separate machine for testing new expert advisors, so tests never slow down live trading;
- a template machine with your terminals, indicators and settings, cloned when you need another one.
Heavy strategy testing needs a lot of CPU. If backtests are your main workload, see the MT5 backtest farm as well.
Renting VPS to other traders
If you provide VPS to other traders, as a signal provider, an EA seller or a small hosting business, Proxmox gives you what you need to run it:
- a separate Windows machine with its own Remote Desktop login for each client;
- limits per machine: cores, memory and disk, so one client cannot slow down the others;
- templates to create a new client machine quickly;
- backups of every machine, and monitoring of the host.
You stay responsible for your clients and for what runs on the machines. If you rent Windows machines to other people, the Windows licenses must allow it; ask us before you start, and we will tell you the options.
How to size the server
Memory is usually the limit for MetaTrader. Each terminal with charts and expert advisors uses memory, and Windows itself needs a few GB per machine. A practical way to plan:
- Count machines and terminals per machine.
- Give each Windows machine enough memory for Windows and its terminals, and add at least 2 GB for Proxmox VE plus room for the storage cache.
- Keep 20 to 30 percent of memory free for growth.
- Use SSD or NVMe drives in a mirror; terminals write logs and history all the time.

The servers are in data centers in Germany and Finland. Latency to your broker matters for some strategies, so check the ping from there to your broker's trade server before you choose.

FAQ
What is a Proxmox VPS?
A virtual machine running on a Proxmox VE host. On your own Proxmox dedicated server you create as many of these VPS machines as the hardware allows, each with its own Windows or Linux, memory and disk.
Why not just rent several VPS?
With many machines, one host is often cheaper per machine, and you control it: you can resize machines, add new ones in minutes, take snapshots and back them up. With separate VPS you pay for each one and depend on each plan's limits.
How many MetaTrader terminals can one server run?
It depends on the number of charts, expert advisors and how busy they are. Memory is usually the limit. Tell us how many terminals and EAs you run, and we will suggest a server and a split into virtual machines.
Can I rent the virtual machines to other traders?
Yes. You create machines for your clients in Proxmox, give each one its own access, and back them up. If you rent Windows machines to other people, the Windows licenses must allow it; ask us before you start.
Which Windows do you install in the VMs?
Windows Server 2022 (Evaluation edition) with Remote Desktop set up. For long-term use a Windows license is required; ask us if you have questions.
Where are the servers?
In data centers in Germany and Finland. Check the ping from there to your broker's trade server before you choose.
Do you install MetaTrader?
We set up the host and the Windows machines with Remote Desktop. You install your terminals and EAs, or ask us for help through a ticket.
I need just one VPS for MetaTrader. Is this for me?
Probably not. For one or a few terminals, a ready MetaTrader VPS from Winservers.NET is simpler. A Proxmox server makes sense when you run many machines or rent them out.
Can I get a refund?
No. Payments and setup fees are not refundable. The minimum payment is 1 month. Mandatory consumer rights under the law remain unchanged.
